VSO Cultural Leaders announced for 2017
Dr. and Mrs. William Gillum honored at the 65th Symphony Anniversary Gala in March
McALLEN — The Valley Symphony Orchestra has announced Dr. and Mrs. William Gillum as the next Cultural Leaders to be honored at the 65th annual Symphony Anniversary Gala on Thursday, March 9, at the McAllen Convention Center Ballroom.
Long-time clarinet musician and retired Ophthalmologist, Dr. William Gillum, has been with the Valley Symphony Orchestra since 2005. His wife, Evelyn, is his biggest fan and supporter.
Before joining the VSO, Dr. Gillum studied clarinet for eight years with famous clarinet virtuoso, Sidney Forrest. Dr. Gillum was also featured in several “Voice of America” broadcasts throughout Europe and was a Concerto Winner at Interlochen Music Camp. He was featured on several NBC Radio broadcasts. Dr. Gillum also played clarinet with the McAllen Symphonic Band since 1982 and also performed as a featured soloist with that organization.
Dr. Gillum earned his B.S. and M.D. from Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his Ophthalmology residency and Oculoplastic Fellowship at the University of Iowa. He served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Ehrling Bergquist Regional USAF Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, and has been in private practice in Ophthalmology at Thurmond Eye Associates since 1980. Together, Dr. & Mrs. William and Evelyn Gillum have supported the Valley Symphony Orchestra and recognized the value of providing a symphony for the pleasure and education of the community.
