GEOFFREY WONG - BIOGRAPHY
VSO Concertmaster Geoffrey Wong was born in Shanghai, China. His first formal instruction in violin began at the early age of 6. At age 14, he entered the Shanghai Conservatory of Music where he received a violin performance degree in 1978.
At the age of 21, Geoffrey’s family moved to Hong Kong where he studied at the Hong Kong Conservatory for three years. His unique artistry won him chamber music competitions two years in a row. He graduated in 1985 with a distinguished violin performance degree. That same year, Wong won a full music scholarship to Rice University. During that time, he played in the Galveston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Ballet, the Houston Music Institute, and the Louisiana Symphony Orchestra as the Assistant Concertmaster.
In 1993, Geoffrey Wong met the late Dr. Carl Seale, conductor emeritus of the VSO and a significant influence who led him to play in numerous chamber ensembles valley-wide and throughout Mexico. A consummate musician and performer of great flexibility, he has served as Concertmaster of the Valley Symphony Orchestra since 1997. Today, Geoffrey maintains a balance between performing in the Valley Symphony Orchestra and teaching students of all ages throughout the Valley in his select private studio. He draws his inspiration from helping students discover their talents while unlocking the wonder and power of music.
