The Marketing and Development Manager is part of an entrepreneurial arts management team that supports Maestro Peter Dabrowski and the Valley Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble of 75+ musicians performing in the Rio Grande Valley. This individual will work closely with the Executive Director and Production Manager to achieve the organization’s earned and contributed revenue goals. This position is responsible for executing marketing and development initiatives including email and direct mail campaigns, social media activity, copywriting for press, web, and mail purposes, and more.


Executive Director


9 am - 5 pm, Monday-Friday with some evening and weekend work


  • Manage and execute subscription and per-concert marketing plans, which include direct mail and email, ad placements, radio buys, online ad buys, grassroots outreach, and more

  • Manage collateral design processes, serving as a liaison between designer and marketing/development teams

  • Draft key marketing and patron deliverables including press releases, appeal letters, and eblast/mailer copy

  • Run the organization’s social media accounts and provide regular analytic reports on social media activity

  • Ensure sponsorship agreement fulfillment by tracking sponsor visibility, press activity, ticket offers, and more as needed

  • Manage the VSO’s donor and patron mailings including annual fund letters, concert communications, and acknowledgement letters 

  • Manage the VSO’s mailing and giving data and generate reports to assist VSO leadership in strategy and decision-making

  • Participate in the grant writing process as needed with oversight from Executive Director 

  • Work with Executive Director to create and maintain data systems and project plans

  • Develop an online fundraising presence, including a case for giving and a gift-making portal

  • Lead planning and execution of special donor and subscriber events

  • Serve as a member of the concert production team

  • Serve as a visible, articulate representative for VSO at relevant meetings and events


  • Strong written and oral communication skills in a variety of contexts

  • Proficiency with MS Excel, MS Word, Adobe PDF and Acrobat, Google Chrome, and Google Docs

  • Proficiency with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

  • Ability to work as a trusted member of a team and take responsibility for shared outcomes

  • Ability to work in a deadline driven environment and manage multiple priorities at once

  • Ability to learn quickly

  • Ability to identify and seek solutions to problems in real time in a fast-paced context

  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed to execute VSO concerts and events


  • Proficiency with Mailchimp, Canva and/or Photoshop, and Social Media advertising and analytics platforms

  • Experience in marketing/development report design and implementation

  • Prior non-profit marketing and/or fundraising experience

  • Familiarity with classical music and/or the performing arts

  • Ability to communicate (written and verbal) in Spanish
